January 7–31, 2025, from the series When It Comes to Serious Scientists, Opinions Are Highly Divided as a part of the exhibition Soft Smiths. Contemporary women's* metalwork, Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko, 2025
"Michalina Bigaj presents the first work from the series When It Comes to Serious Scientists, Opinions Are Highly Divided, as part of which she has created metal gates inspired by climate disasters such as fires, hurricanes, and floods. Put together, they comprise a visual “library of curses,” a collection of overlapping images that lose legibility and arrange themselves into an aestheticized chaos. Bigaj deliberately uses an attractive, almost drawing-like form to reflect the way in which the media simplify and aestheticize the message about disasters. The work draws on Nicholas Mirzoeff’s reflection on how the depiction of climate phenomena—such as smog or spectacular sunsets—can mask their true meaning. The gate shown in Orońsko references the disastrous fires that raged in Los Angeles in early 2025."
